Portland Christmas lights worth the trip from Vancouver, WA (2026)

By Permanent Lights NW · Last updated · Checked against organizers' and official pages

Four Portland light shows are worth the trip from Clark County. Winter Wonderland at Portland International Raceway is a drive-through and the closest; it runs November 27 to December 31, 2026. ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo is a walk with timed tickets, November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights, a walk with concerts, opens November 27. Peacock Lane is a free neighborhood street; its 2026 dates aren't posted yet, and it ran December 15 to 31 in 2025.

Take I-5 for the raceway, the zoo and Peacock Lane, and the I-205 bridge for The Grotto. Your ZooLights ticket doubles as a TriMet fare on your visit date, but it doesn't cover C-TRAN.

Drive times start at Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver. They're free-flow routing estimates rounded up for some traffic, not measured trips; December evenings, bridge lifts and entry lines add more.

ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo

The zoo's holiday walk has glowing tunnels and wildlife-themed displays, with life-size animal lanterns along the zoo train route and a lit train ride. Most of the animals aren't on view during ZooLights. Concessions include hot chocolate, elephant ears and s'mores.

Tickets are timed and sold online by the zoo, and you can enter up to 30 minutes after your ticket time. Prices change by night, from $13 to $35 for adults and $13 to $30 for youth. “Any Night” tickets work any night from November 20 to December 31, 2026. Members get 20% off regular-price tickets, and the zoo offers an income-assistance discount.

The zoo warns that only tickets bought on its own site are valid. A ticket reseller's ad sat at the top of the search results when we checked, so buy at oregonzoo.org.

Before the regular season, the zoo holds BrewLights (November 13 and 14), a member preview (November 15) and a sensory-friendly night on November 16, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., with quieter music, limited attendance and cool-down spaces.

Getting to ZooLights from Vancouver

  • Driving: Washington Park's pay-by-plate lots cost $2.40 an hour, up to $9.60 a day, with paid hours from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; rates can change during special events. Pay at the stations or with the ParkingKitty app. The lot next to the zoo is small, and a free overflow shuttle runs on busy days.
  • Park and ride: the zoo suggests parking free at Sunset Transit Center (600-plus spaces) and taking MAX one stop east to Washington Park station. Trains come every 10 minutes or less.
  • Transit the whole way: your ZooLights ticket covers TriMet (bus, MAX, WES, LIFT and Portland Streetcar) to and from the zoo on your visit date, but not C-TRAN, so you'll need a C-TRAN Regional fare for the Washington leg. C-TRAN Route 60 runs from downtown Vancouver (Broadway and 12th St) to Delta Park/Vanport MAX; ride MAX into downtown Portland and change to a westbound Red or Blue Line train to Washington Park. From east Vancouver, C-TRAN Route 65 runs from Fisher's Landing Transit Center over the I-205 bridge to Parkrose/Sumner Transit Center, where the MAX Red Line goes to Washington Park. Both C-TRAN routes run until about midnight on weekdays and weekends.
  • Accessibility: the zoo covers 64 acres with about 150 feet of elevation change. Most paths, restrooms and food areas are ADA accessible, wheelchairs and scooters can be rented first come, first served, and the train takes wheelchairs. Free sensory kits are available, and a one-to-one support person gets a free ticket.

Winter Wonderland at Portland International Raceway

The closest of the four, just across the I-5 bridge: about 10 minutes from downtown Vancouver in light traffic, plus the entry line. It's a drive-through priced per car and run by the nonprofit Sunshine Division. Expect about 35 minutes on the course and a wait of up to an hour on weekends and peak nights (December 18 to 25 in 2026). Chains and studded tires aren't allowed.

Prices, discount tickets, and the walk and bike nights are in our drive-through guide.

The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights

A walk-through festival on the grounds of The Grotto, a Catholic shrine and botanical garden in Northeast Portland. It pairs the lights with choir concerts in the Chapel of Mary, a puppet show at the top of each hour and carolers at the bottom of each hour. The route is about a quarter mile, and visits average 60 to 90 minutes. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early if you want a particular concert.

The 2026 festival opens November 27; hours and prices aren't posted yet. In 2025 it ran nightly from November 28 to December 30 except Christmas Day, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Online tickets were $16.95 general and $7.95 youth ($18.95 and $8.95 at the gate), with cheaper value nights early in December, and visitors were asked to bring a non-perishable food item for SnowCap.

Parking is free in the main lot and on nearby streets. On busy nights, use the overflow lot at the Parkrose/Sumner Park & Ride on Sandy Boulevard, where a free shuttle runs every festival night; from east Vancouver, C-TRAN Route 65 goes to the same transit center. Paths are paved but slope in places, wheelchairs can be borrowed from the gift shop, and drivers can drop passengers at the entrance.

Peacock Lane

Residents of this four-block street in Southeast Portland, between SE Stark and SE Belmont, have decorated their mostly Tudor-style homes every Christmas since 1932. It's free and non-commercial: no vendors, no flyers, no fundraising.

The 2026 dates aren't posted yet. In 2025 the lane was lit December 15 to 31, 6 to 11 p.m., with pedestrian-only nights on December 19 and 20, and a free cocoa and cider booth from 6 p.m., December 15 to 24.

Walking is the easy way. In 2025 cars were allowed from December 18 to 31, except on the two pedestrian-only nights. If you drive, turn your headlights off and expect a line of 30 minutes or more to get onto the lane from SE Belmont or SE Stark, then 15 to 45 minutes to crawl the four blocks. Police can close it to cars at any time. Crowds thin after December 25, though the cocoa booth is closed by then.

There's no official parking, and Walgreens asks visitors not to use its lot. Park legally a few blocks away and walk, or take TriMet as the residents suggest. Dogs are welcome on a leash; walk your bike on the lane.

More options, near and far

  • The Christmas Ships sail past the Vancouver waterfront on December 3, 11 and 16, 2026, so you don't have to cross the river at all. See our Christmas Ships guide.
  • Christmas on the Campground (5414 SE Duke St) and Starkwood Holiday Lights (off SE Stark St at SE 111th Ave) are free to see from the car. Both are in our drive-through guide.
  • Pittock Mansion decorates its rooms for the holidays, but it's a daytime indoor visit, not a light show. The 2025–26 Decades Tour ran November 17, 2025, to January 11, 2026; 2026 plans aren't out. Parking there is very limited.
  • Portland's tree lighting in Pioneer Courthouse Square was November 28, 2025, 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The 2026 date isn't posted.
  • Clackamas County Winter Fair in Canby, about 50 to 60 minutes away, is a half-mile walk past more than 200,000 lights that ends at a lit-tree show in the rodeo arena. In 2025 it ran Fridays and Saturdays, November 28 to December 20, 5 to 9 p.m., for $10 per adult and $5 per child ages 4 to 12. The 2026 dates aren't posted.
  • Skamania Lodge's Holiday Light Walk in Stevenson is about an hour east on SR-14, with no river crossing. In 2025 it was free and ran nightly from November 28 to January 4, 5 to 9 p.m.; 2026 isn't announced.

Closer to home, our Clark County Christmas lights map covers Vancouver's home displays, the tree lightings and the Christmas Ships viewing spots.

Not running, or not a December light show

  • Oaks Park's Winter Gleam ran only in 2024 and wasn't announced for 2025. The park's site listed no holiday light event when we checked.
  • We found no holiday light event at the Portland Japanese Garden in its own review of 2025.
  • The Portland Winter Light Festival happens every February, not in December.

Which bridge, and when

  • I-5 is the faster crossing for Winter Wonderland, the Oregon Zoo, Pittock Mansion and Peacock Lane. SR-14 to the I-205 bridge is faster for The Grotto and East Portland.
  • The I-5 Interstate Bridge can lift for river traffic outside the weekday rush-hour windows (6:30 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 to 6 p.m.), which includes weekday evenings and weekends. If you have a timed ticket, leave extra time.
  • The Interstate Bridge Replacement program counts about 10 hours of congestion on a typical weekday (2019 data). Leave after the evening commute, or go on a weekend.

Portland Christmas lights questions

Is there a Winter Wonderland in Portland?
Yes. Sunshine Division's Winter Wonderland is a drive-through light show at Portland International Raceway, November 27 to December 31, 2026.
Where can I see the best Christmas lights in Portland?
The four most people plan a trip around are ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo, Winter Wonderland at Portland International Raceway, The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights and Peacock Lane. From Vancouver, the Christmas Ships are the easiest: they come to you.
Where is the largest Christmas light display near Portland?
Winter Wonderland bills itself as the largest holiday light show in the Pacific Northwest, with more than a million lights over two miles, and The Grotto advertises millions of lights. Both figures are the organizers' own.
When do Christmas lights start in Portland?
ZooLights' special nights begin November 13, 2026, and its regular season on November 20. Winter Wonderland and The Grotto open November 27. Peacock Lane starts in mid-December; it was December 15 in 2025.
Can you drive through Peacock Lane?
On some nights. In 2025 the residents allowed cars from December 18 to 31, except on the pedestrian-only nights of December 19 and 20, and police can close the lane to cars at any time. Turn your headlights off and expect a 30-minute-plus line and 15 to 45 minutes on the lane.
What is the schedule for Peacock Lane in 2026?
Not posted as of September 25, 2026. In 2025 the lane was lit December 15 to 31, 6 to 11 p.m.
Is Peacock Lane worth the trip, and which night is best?
If you like classic neighborhood displays, yes: residents of the four-block street have decorated their mostly Tudor-style homes every Christmas since 1932, and it costs nothing. Go by December 24 for the free cocoa and cider booth (it ran December 15 to 24 in 2025), or after Christmas, when the residents say crowds thin. Walking is easier than driving, and in 2025 December 19 and 20 were pedestrian-only nights.
Where do you park for Peacock Lane?
There's no official parking, and the Walgreens lot is off-limits. Park legally a few blocks away and walk, or take TriMet.
Do you need ZooLights tickets in advance?
Yes. Tickets are timed and sold online by the zoo, and the zoo says only tickets bought on its own site are valid.
Are there cheaper ZooLights nights or discounts?
Prices change by night, from $13 to $35 for adults and $13 to $30 for youth, so compare a few dates before you buy. Zoo members get 20% off regular-price tickets, and the zoo offers an income-assistance discount. Buy from the zoo's own site; it says tickets bought anywhere else aren't valid.
Does the ZooLights ticket work on C-TRAN?
No. It covers TriMet buses, MAX, WES, LIFT and Portland Streetcar on your visit date, but you'll need a C-TRAN fare for the Washington side.
Where do you park for ZooLights?
In Washington Park's pay-by-plate lots ($2.40 an hour, $9.60 a day at most, with rates that can change during events), or free at Sunset Transit Center, one MAX stop from Washington Park.
How long does The Grotto Festival of Lights take?
Most visits take 60 to 90 minutes. The walk is about a quarter mile, with concerts, puppet shows and caroling along the way.
Which bridge should I take from Vancouver to see Portland Christmas lights?
I-5 for Winter Wonderland, the Oregon Zoo and Peacock Lane; SR-14 and the I-205 bridge for The Grotto and East Portland. On weekday evenings and weekends, the I-5 bridge can lift for river traffic.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs can ride in your car at Winter Wonderland, which also holds leashed-dog walking nights, and Peacock Lane welcomes leashed dogs. Check the zoo's own rules before bringing a pet to ZooLights.
